This is an extra special day! My wife and I are in the hospital, and she is going to give birth to our first child, Sam! I am in a great mood too, since this ninth episode is one of my favorites. I guarantee you will like it too....well, that's debatable...
Season 1, Episode 9
"Debate 109"
Jeff is enlisted by Annie to join the debate team. The group discovers Abed's films online that show he may be a psychic. Britta lets Pierce help rid her smoking addiction through the means of hypnosis.
Best Lines
Jeff: Britta, I'm saying this because I care about you and you're my friend. You need to start smoking again.
Dean Pelton: Listen, jerk wad. I'm sorry that got heated. Greendale needs a win. The best compliment our sports program gets is that our basketball team is really gay.
Troy: This is wrinkling my brain.
Actor playing Troy: This is wrinkling my brain.
Troy: That's wrinkling my brain.
Basketball Coach: Oh, great try, Bruce. Great try.
Jeff: You and I are going to study harder and beat City College tomorrow.
Annie: Really?
Jeff: No. Who am I, iCarly?
Troy: I liked you better smoking.
Britta: I'm so sorry.
Troy: No. You're right, my feet are long and stupid. You can't unring that bell.
Jeff: You know, maybe we should study alone.
Annie: Yeah. Uh-huh/
Jeff: Separately
Annie: That way we can be more reproductive-- Productive.
Annie: Oh, you forgot your phone.
Jeff: I can get another one.
Annie: He was horny, so he dropped him. Man is evil.
Random Thingamajigs
Simmons is a master debater.
The guy who plays Troy looks like Snoop Dog.
The basketball coach has a ridiculous mustache.
This might be the episode where Dean Pelton falls in love with Jeff.
The ending was pretty good...even if Troy hated it.
Shirley tapping Abed on the shoulder over an over. That's nice.
Jeff pats Annie on the head, then runs away without his most prized possession: his phone.
Abed realizes he is a genius when Whitman says there is a full moon. I think this is the last time we see Whitman. I wonder if he is a werewolf.
Final Grade
89% Such a spectacle to behold. A funny episode with a lot happening. The whole Jeff/Annie situation comes to be and in a very unexpected (except in Abed's mind) way. Britta quits smoking, Troy finds his emotional side, and hopefully Shirley wasn't eaten by a werewolf. Great guest character, Simmons. The return of Whitman was a delight. Even the basketball team showed up for some team building exercise. It might make the top 10 or just barely miss the cut.
